Peace and Earth Committee asks Friends to contact Congressman Chuck Edwards to express your feelings about his position on immigration. The Committee offers these talking points as possible guidance for your message:
* We are opposed to the so-called "Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act of 2021" (H.R. 515) reintroduced by you in the current session as H.R. 7628 in the House and in the Senate as S. 3927 by Sen. Thom Tillis.
* We oppose punishing entire cities and/or states for efforts to provide safe haven for refugees and a meaningful future for hard-working people seeking a better life in our America. The Geneva Conventions prohibit collective punishment.
* We want our government to dedicate its efforts and resources to strengthening and expanding pathways to legal residency and citizenship, not criminalizing people for seeking a better life, putting them at risk of detention or denial of their right to seek asylum.
* We welcome immigrants. Our ancestors were immigrants. There are immigrants in our community: professional people, workers, teachers, entrepreneurs, neighbors, and friends. America leads the world, as Ronald Reagan said, because we draw our people -- our strength -- from every corner of the world.
