AFM/UU Service to the Homeless

Posted by admin on Jan 26, 2010 in Community Support and Outreach, Other Events, Uncategorized

Our Meeting, in coordination with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville, is taking part in an ecumenical service project to serve the homeless in our community. We have agreed to share with them the responsibility of serving breakfast at Pritchard Park on 2/14. Several Friends have already signed up to provide food for this effort. If you would like to contribute food, or your time, please contact Jim Cavener.

In conjunction with this project, we have been invited to join with the UU in a memorial service to honor those homeless people who passed away during the past year. This event will be held at the UU Church at Charlotte Street and Edwin Place, from 2 pm to 4 pm next Saturday, 1/30. The service will be followed by a pot luck. Again, contact Jim Cavener for more info.

An impromptu memorial service

Posted by admin on Jun 8, 2009 in Meeting News

A Friend told of the death of a dear friend. He related how he tries to put the events of his life into a grander context, but as he has reflected on his friend’s untimely death, he has been at a loss to know what context to put it in. Certainly it illustrates how fragile we all are and how unpredictable are our relationships. He and this friend had been very close, many years ago, but in time they became geographically separated and lost contact for several years. More recently, they had re-established contact. He recounted that this friend was a thoroughly admirable person: intelligent, kind, great sense of humor, the most likable person you’d ever meet.

Ten days ago, he learned that his friend had committed suicide. He wondered about having a memorial service, in the manner of Friends. But the parents were very private people, and he knew they had to deal with this in their own way. And other friends were more inclined to put it behind them and move on. As the Friend spoke of his longing to have a memorial service for him, he realized that, in a weird way, that’s just what he was doing.

Bob Cox passes away

Posted by admin on Feb 2, 2009 in Meeting News, Passages

Robert Milton “Bob” Cox died on January 7th after declining health due to Alzheimers disease.

Bob and Ellie Cox were active in Asheville Friends meeting in the late 1970s and much of the 1980s, before there was a Brevard Meeting. They commuted for several years, then later help found and nurture, and joined, Brevard Friends Meeting, which they continued to attend even after moving to Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC, some years ago.  A few folks in our meeting will remember Ellie and Bob, and they will be remembered by others in Swannanoa Valley Meeting, formerly active in Asheville.

There will be a Memorial Meeting in a traditional programmed form at Tryon Estates, Columbus, North Carolina, on Saturday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, February 22 at 2:00 there will be an unprogrammed Memorial Meeting in Brevard, at St Timothy’s United Methodist Church, located on Asheville Highway, on the north side of Brevard. This will be conducted by Brevard Monthly Meeting and will be lead by Robert French of Brevard Meeting.

Ellie would welcome friends/Friends from Asheville and area who remember their years in Asheville meeting in the 1970s and 1980s, during which time Bob served as clerk of Asheville Meeting.
