CONFERENCE ON ACCOUNTABILITY – APRIL 8 -10
The conference is entitled “Weaving a Net of Accountability: Taking
on Extraordinary Rendition at the State and Regional Level.” It will
take place April 8-10 at the John Hope Franklin Center, Duke

WNC Coffee Party will hold a meeting at the Asheville Friends Meeting, upstairs, on April 10 at 2 PM. Please enter at back door, as another group will be using the downstairs space. The Coffee advocates a shift in focus, toward grass-roots level action that will be oriented toward creating action that empowers citizens’ in affecting their government, and toward trying to find common ground with others usually seen as adversaries, in order to be able to work together to try to fix what’s broken in government.
WNC Coffee Party, Downtown Asheville group, will hold their meeting April 24 at AFM upstairs, at 2 PM April 24. Again, please enter at the back door.

TRANSITION ASHEVILLE DISCUSSION ON PEAK OIL
Just as climate change will affect the stability of our ecosystem, the
coming decline in petroleum production will soon affect the stability
of our economy and our entire way of life. Come find out about this
and the Transition Town movement, which seeks to pro-actively rebuild
local resilience and prepare for these coming crises. The meeting
will consist of a 30-minute movie, followed by discussion.

WNC PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY meeting on April 16 at noon.
WNC PSR’s next ‘bring your own lunch’ meeting will be Friday, April16,
from Noon till 2 PM in the office/residence of Nuclear Information &
Resource Service (NIRS) at 45 Riverview Dr. in West Asheville. To get
there from Patton Ave. in East Asheville, turn south on Clingman Ave.,
continue across French Broad River on River Link Bridge; then take the
1st left which is Riverview Dr. In a very short distance you reach
#43 Riverview on the right followed by the driveway leading to the
NIRS house #45, directly behind #43. PLEASE PARK ON RIVERVIEW DR.

OPENING OF SENATOR HAGAN’S ASHEVILLE OFFICE on April 17 at 10 AM.
Senator Kay Hagan will be at the opening of her Asheville Senate
office on Wednesday April 17 from 10-11am. Address is 82 Patton

DISCUSSION ON THE SOCIAL EFFECTS OF CHEAP OIL on April 25 at 6 PM
Asheville Green Drinks, BoBo Gallery, Lexington St., Asheville
Cecil Bothwell will discuss the social effects of cheap oil, including
the way in which war costs have not been attributed to the low price
of oil.

BOOK RELEASE on April 29 at 7 PM
Book release, Malaprop’s Cafe and Books
Cecil Bothwell will talk about the consequences of belief when he
introduces his new book, Whale Falls.

TRANSITION ASHEVILLE PICNIC on April 29 at 5:30
Everyone is invited to a picnic at Malvern Hills Park on Thursday,
April 29th. We’ll be out there from 5:30 until dark. Bring your own
picnic supper and socialize with others interested in Transition.
We’re celebrating the conclusion of our first round of Handbook study
groups, the arrival of spring, and our general gratitude! Malvern
Hills Park is located at 75 Rumbough Pl., Asheville.

The May Open Space is scheduled for Sunday, May 16th, from 2 pm to 5
pm at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 20 Oak Street,
Asheville. Come and help us shape the vision for Transition in our
area!!!

Veterans for Peace have a weekly vigil at 5 PM at Pack Square on Tuesdays.

Haywood Peace Vigilers have a weekly vigil at 4 PM on Wednesday at
Haywood Country Courthouse in Waynesville.

Women in Black have a weekly vigil at 5 PM at Pack Square on Fridays.

Transylvanians for Peace have a weekly vigil at noon in front of the
courthouse in Brevard.

Peacetown meets weekly on Tuesday at 6 PM at the Veterans for Peace
Headquarters at the Courtyard Gallery, 9 Walnut Street.

++ Contact Rep. Shuler and ask that he demand an EXIT STRATEGY from
Afghanistan before voting for any bill that funds the ongoing
occupation in that country. Shuler did vote to implement the Iraq
Study Group recommendations and he says that Iraq was a mistake and it
is time to end our presence in Afghanistan.
