The Asheville Prayer Breakfast will take place on 1/19/2008. As always, Bob S has advance tickets at Meeting for those interested in attending. Another Prayer Breakfast opportunity will be at the Ridgecrest Conference Center on Feb 2. Call (or email) Steve L or Lynnora B for more information.
A Memorial Service will be held for Jim at the Jubilee! Community Church, 46 Wall Street, downtown Asheville, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan 26. Parking is available in the Wall Street parking deck (which has an elevator) or across Patton Avenue in the First Union parking lot (which entails a stairway from Patton Avenue up to Wall Street).
Thanks to a generous member of Meeting, we have replaced our old, cumbersome tables with new, much lighter weight ones. Though some of the old tables are worn, some are in perfectly usable condition. Any Friend who wants to take one for their personal use is welcome to do so. They will be on the porch for the remainder of the week.
We welcomed Alice back to Meeting for Worship this past week. She reported that each First Day, though she was unable to come in to Meeting, she was with us in spirit as she devoted the hour to silent worship in her apartment at Deerfield.
Jim C reported that Marcia called quite early on the morning of 12/23/2007 to say that she thought that would be Jim’s last day. She was right. Jim died that night around 10:15. She said that Jim left “very quickly.” She wants to thank all the good Friends who sat with her and brought food during that last day and night. After a holiday journey to Michigan to be with family (and meet her new grandchildren!), Marcia returned to Meeting this past week. She spoke during Meeting with faith and courage about the last moments she and Jim were together, prefacing her testimony with a familiar passage from the Bible:
but they that wait upon the Lord
shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint.

Bob S reports that his older son, David, who has always aspired to a career in acting, is currently performing in “A Christmas Carol” with a troupe in Louisville, and was recently chosen to understudy a role on Broadway. Good luck David – or as they say backstage: break a leg!
