Actions,
Local Social Action
Forwarded by War Resister’s League: this Saturday September 4th, a local activist has planned a public funeral dirge on the sidewalks of downtown Asheville. This procession is to honor the loss of human and animal life caused by the BP Oil Spill. The devastation of truth in media, the devastation caused to our environment from oil corporations, and the horrible reality of the diminishing wetlands, are all impetus for this funeral to exist. This event is open to the public. It is asked that you dress in black. Black veils along with black armbands will be provided if you want them. They have made cardboard coffins painted black with stenciled images of pelicans, dolphins, and sea turtles. The hope for inviting the Western North Carolina community to participate in this funeral is to create solidarity amongst one another and to be given an opportunity to acknowledge the death and damage delivered to our Gulf coast.
Meet at the Sean Pace Gallery, 5 Walnut Street, suite 102, (four doors up from Scully’s) 11:30 am, plan to walk at Noon. A simple route through and around downtown is planned. Should not take longer then an hour. Pets are welcome.

Dear Friends,
This weekend is a time of food and fellowship as we join with Swannanoa Valley Friends for a potluck picnic on Saturday evening, and then celebrate two important milestones after rise of Meeting on Sunday.
Festivities will begin on Saturday at 5 p.m at the Meetinghouse as we gather with Friends from Swannanoa Valley Meeting for what we hope will be the first of many potluck get-togethers. As usual, Friends are encouraged to bring healthy, home-made offerings, and label the ingredients with a concern for those folks who have food sensitivities.
After rise of Meeting on Sunday, we will have a joint celebration of the recent marriage of Laura Maynard and Doug Lane and the transfer of membership of our now-longtime Friend Edie Patrick. Leftovers are likely but should not be taken for granted.
Also, Friends have the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of those less fortunate in our larger Asheville community in several ways.
First, we have our ongoing Manna Food Bank collection box in the foyer, waiting to be filled with canned goods and other non-perishable food items. Second, Friend Jim C. is collecting bed linens, blankets, and towels to be donated to A-Hope, Asheville’s primary access point for support services for homeless people. And third, Friend Susan O. is helping folks who are transitioning from homelessness to independent living by collecting small appliances, dishes, and tableware. If you have larger items such as furniture to donate, please contact her in advance. All other items can be brought to Meeting – along with your contributions to our weekend festivities!
Best wishes,
Steve

The NAACP has a petition against racism and intolerance and hate.
* I believe all Americans have equal rights and equal value.
* I cherish the diverse cultures, beliefs, and values of America.
* I believe we can disagree without being disagreeable.
* I repudiate all acts of racism and hate, both in words and action.
* I have faith in the promise of America – a promise built on mutual respect, common civility, and hope for a better tomorrow.
* I commit to building that better America by participating actively and peacefully in the democratic process. We are one people. We are one nation. I’m an NAACP American. The NAACP is asking the Tea Party to denounce racism clearly and indisputably, and they’re succeeding. Just today the Tea Party Federation kicked out the entire “Tea Party Express” group over its leader’s hateful remarks. But more pressure is needed to make sure it doesn’t stop there. I just signed the pledge to make it known that I support the NAACP’s condemnation of all racist acts committed by members of the Tea Party. You can join me, and the NAACP, to stop the hate. Add your name to the pledge: http://action.naacp.org/AgainstHate As NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous said, “We’ve seen the signs, we’ve heard the slurs, and all we’re asking is for you to act responsibly and say there’s no space for bigots in the Tea Party.” Make sure the NAACP knows they have your support — sign the pledge: http://action.naacp.org/AgainstHate Thanks!

Kabuki Activism: Obama, Axelrod Engage on Unemployment Extension After Outcome Decided
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend of the White House ramping up its rhetorical machinery only after a gain has been secured. Organizing for America is becoming famous for sending out emails on votes where the outcome is pre-ordained; they did it last week with the Wall Street reform vote in the Senate, after enough Senators made their positions known to get to 60 votes. Now it’s happening again on unemployment insurance. President Obama’s weekly address was hard-hitting and actually welcome, slamming Republicans for opting to “filibuster our recovery and obstruct our progress.” David Axelrod followed up with an email to supporters. The White House on Saturday deployed senior advisor David Axelrod to bolster President Barack Obama’s political attack on Senate Republicans for blocking extension of unemployment benefits. Axelrod, echoing Obama’s weekly radio address, circulated an email that calls on Republicans to allow an up-or-down vote: “Unemployment insurance is a vital lifeline for many families struggling to find work in these tough times. Over the past few weeks, that lifeline has disappeared for more than 2 million Americans, and if Congress doesn’t act, that number will grow to 3.2 million people by the end of this month,” Axelrod writes. I’m happy to see the White House enter the playing field on unemployment benefits, but this is a fait accompli. Fifteen minutes after Carte Goodwin gets sworn in on Tuesday as West Virginia’s newest Senator, the Senate will vote to proceed on the unemployment bill, and they will have the votes for passage.

07/16/10 FILM AT UU CHURCH ASHEVILLE
What if all the expectations you have about the future are completely wrong? “Blind Spot” is a documentary film that illustrates the current oil and energy crisis that our world is facing. Whatever measures of ignorance, greed, wishful thinking, we have put ourselves at a crossroad, which offers two paths with dire consequences. If we continue to burn fossil fuels we will choke the life out of the planet and if we don’t our way of life will collapse. Come see a showing of this film Friday, July 16 at 7 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1 Edwin Place, in Asheville.

FROM AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Abused by the Taliban. Battered by the Pakistani army. Attacked by U.S. Drones.
Protect civilians in northwest Pakistan from suffering in a hellish human rights free zone.
When I saw people putting the dead bodies of my children, parents, and other relatives in bed I couldn’t bear it anymore and fell on the ground. I lost my sense…as if hell fell on me.” This shocking testimony comes from a 25-year old Pakistani man who lost nine family members when two shells, fired by Pakistani security forces, hit his house. Far from an isolated incident, the civilian killings took place in the alarmingly violent and lawless tribal areas of northwest Pakistan. The residents in these regions are subject to horrific abuses by the Pakistani Taliban and have no legal protection by the Pakistani government. Most disturbing is the fact that they are increasingly attacked on three different fronts – by the Taliban, by the Pakistani army and by U.S. Drone strikes. Yet the suffering of the people of this area has been ignored, sacrificed in the name of geopolitical interests. Blow off the veil of silence. Sign our petition urging the U.S. Government to face the human right crisis in northwest Pakistan.
